Young people invited to “climate change” puppet workshops
With £6,300 in funding, puppeteer Tony Gee is running a series of workshops in Totnes and Kingsbridge to give young people the chance to express their feelings and views on climate change and biodiversity.
The Talking Forest project for young people aged 8-16 will culminate in the ‘world’s greatest puppet show‘ in Totnes, with the live performance captured by a professional filmmaker to demonstrate how climate change is affecting children.
A team of five artists are involved in the project, which will begin with two workshops at Dodbrooke Parish Hall, Kingsbridge on Monday and Tuesday 21 and 22 February, then at Totnes Civic Hall on Thursday and Friday 24 and 25 February. All workshops will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Working with artists, young people participating in the workshops will help create the north, south, east and west regions of a “worldwide forest” – a mythical place filled with creatures and plants from all over planet Earth, where all living beings have a voice and everything speaks.
At each workshop, everyone involved will make their own quality puppet creatures brought to life by expert and experienced puppeteers, then write, design, rehearse and perform their own shows.
Once the four parts of the forest have been completed and each of the four acts written and performed, these elements will be brought together for a final workshop open to all those who participated in one of the first four workshops.
A potential cast of some 200 puppeteers and even more puppeteers will then perform the final show at Totnes Civic Hall on Saturday February 26.
Organizer Tony of Creation Myth Puppets said: “If you are between the ages of eight and 16 and want to bring a huge live talking forest to life, then please come along.
“Together we can create a magnificent creative spectacle.”
The project was jointly funded by South Hams Council who donated £3,500, Totnes City Council who donated £23,000 and £500 from Devon County Councilor Julian Brazil’s climate change budget.
