Saanich Lacrosse Association celebrates 50th anniversary with collaborative photo collage – Victoria News
Were you a Saanich lacrosse star in the 1970s? Or maybe a grungy goalie in the 90s? The Saanich Lacrosse Association is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a collaborative pandemic-friendly photo project and is calling for nominations to help fill the gallery with memories over the years.
The Saanich Lacrosse Association was incorporated in 1971, making 2021 the 50th anniversary. Before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the association planned to invite its current and former members to a big tournament and a barbecue to celebrate this milestone, said Andy Stuart, president of the association. The plans were adjusted after the management team realized that the big rally they had in mind couldn’t happen this year.
Instead, the association is asking all of its former athletes, volunteers, coaches, parents and spectators to browse their photo albums for dusty Polaroids, digital prints and crisp smartphone photos of players and teams from the past 50. years. The photos will be compiled to create a virtual collage or slideshow to share with the public in honor of the anniversary.
Not only did the pandemic cause the in-person celebration to be canceled, it also resulted in all games and scrums being closed, Stuart said. It was difficult to keep players involved this year as they were limited to social distancing practices focused on skills and drills. He hopes the photo project will be a fun exercise to motivate members until normal play can resume.
Photos and videos can be submitted to [email protected] before May 15th.
