Immersive Audio Experience Returning to Saratoga Spa State Park | state
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Ellen Reid SOUNDWALK is back at Saratoga Spa State Park, with a relaunch slated for May 20.
Created by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Reid and co-commissioned by the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Ellen Reid SOUNDWALK is a GPS-enabled public artwork in Saratoga Spa State Park that uses music to light up the natural environment.
This immersive audio experience is tailor-made for the Saratoga Spa State Park, with its famous natural springs, wooded areas, a geyser, a waterfall and more.
After making her park debut last fall, Ellen Reid SOUNDWALK returns this spring with a significantly expanded exhibit for art lovers.
The exhibit, which will be available until June 1, 2022, is free to the public and can be experienced while following social distancing guidelines using the Ellen Reid SOUNDWALK smartphone app and a pair of headphones.
“Last fall, PSPC was one of the first places in the country to present SOUNDWALK. This experience, mixing music and nature, has been so popular that we are re-establishing it as a more permanent installation that will be available throughout the year, ”said Elizabeth Sobol, President and CEO of Saratoga Performing Arts Center. “Connecting the unique beauty of our natural surroundings … lush pines, walks in the woods, geysers and natural springs … with a composition by one of the young composers announced today is an essential part of our expanded mission.
Based in New York, Reid is a composer and sound artist whose scope of work encompasses opera, sound design, film scores, ensemble and choral writing. She received the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Music for her opera, taken Mr. She is also the co-founder of the Luna Composition Lab, a mentoring program for young, female, non-binary, or gender non-conforming composers. Since 2019, Reid has served as Creative Advisor and Composer in Residence for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.
Her latest project, Ellen Reid SOUNDWALK, kicked off with its world premiere at Central Park in New York City last September. Then, locally, the site-specific experience was available to visitors to Saratoga Spa State Park from September 21 to November 1, 2020.
“PSPC was one of the early adopters of the project,” Reid said during his visit to Saratoga Springs in preparation for the upcoming relaunch.
Between walks through the Saratoga Spa State Park trail system, “It’s so perfect for the SOUNDWALK,” said Reid, admiring the beauty of the park.
Now the exhibit returns to the spa town with more than double the geographic reach of the park and around 10 times the musical content.
“One thing I really like now is how it works as a larger composition, and how there are different themes and variations,” Reid said. “You can host so many different experiences in the park, that I hope people really do it more than once and find out how it all connects.”
Because participants are able to determine the sounds they hear based on the areas of the park they are exploring, “you become a creative force in the project,” explained Reid. “It changes every time you do it.”
As the relaunch approaches, Reid is hoping SOUNDWALK will attract people who are both familiar and unfamiliar with Saratoga Spa State Park. “One of the interesting things about the project is that I hope that people who haven’t been here will come here,” she said, “and for the people who have been here before and who are here. like, it will bring a new perspective to the park. they know and like really well.
Beyond the two New York State exhibitions, Ellen Reid SOUNDWALK is expected to be available soon in approximately 10 locations across the country.
Looking ahead, “we are developing the technology as the project progresses,” said Reid, who introduced SOUNDWALK amid the COVID-19 pandemic, “so we’ll see how it continues to grow and we’ll see. what shape it. takes when people can engage and use it in different ways. “
