It can be noted that while golf has been played in the state since the 19th century, Assam has never had a state golf association. Since the days of the Raj when the British introduced this amazing sport called golf for their recreation in Assam with the very first golf course at Jorhat in the late 19th century, the sport has been played with great seriousness in various golf clubs. on the northern and southern banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River. The officers of the tea and petroleum companies and the armed forces have been the driving force behind the growth and longevity of golf in Assam.
With golf growing in importance in recent years, especially becoming an Olympic sport, it has become imperative that, like all other Olympic sports, the game of golf also needs association at the level of the Olympic Games. State to fulfill the mandate of promoting sport in a structured way, particularly targeting young people to take up sport seriously.
In this regard, golfers from most of the 25 golf clubs in Assam have joined together to form the All Assam Golf Cub Association (AGCA) as the supreme body for the promotion of golf and golf activities in Assam , as various other states in India have already done. Several rounds of discussions have taken place between the executive members of these golf clubs and an interim committee has been formed to carry out the initial duties of registering the AGCA with the office of the Jorhat Gymkhana club which owns the golf course emblematic of heritage. The registration was finally granted on 7.4.22 and the IGU also recognized the AGCA as a state golf association on 11.5.22 after being satisfied that the AGCA met all the conditions in accordance with the constitution of the IGU.
With Kumar Sanjay Krishna, Former Chief Secretary of IAS, Govt. of Assam as Chief Patron and Prabhat Kamal Bezbaruah, renowned tea planter and avid golfer as Patron, the following officers were elected in accordance with due process for a term of two years:
The AGCA aims to serve the State of Assam with the commitment to promote golf, aspiring golfers and recreational golfers, and to protect as well as preserve the state’s heritage golf courses.
For the National Games that will follow, the AGCA 2022 is in the process of selecting players for the same. This is the first step in moving golf in the state from recreational to competitive sports, which will eventually create an atmosphere in which homegrown talent could be allowed to perform on the national/international stage.
