Alliance of Desert Theaters unveils desert performing arts
In the same month, when Coachella Valley-based Coyote Stageworks theater group announced it was shutting down after 13 seasons, members of the Alliance of Desert Theaters (AODT) is using the platform of the recently reopened State of Pandemic Restrictions to promote a host of performances starting this summer.
The AODT is a production cooperative of theater companies and live entertainment organizations in the Coachella Valley that formed following the pandemic shutdown in March 2020. Initially a local effort of six organizations AODT’s founding members grew to 16 nonprofit organizations, including dance and music companies.
The AODT currently includes representatives from the following performing arts groups: California Desert Chorale, Children’s Playtime Productions, Coachella Valley Repertory (CVRep), Coachella Valley Symphony, Desert Ensemble Theater, Desert Theater, Dezart Performs, Green Room Theater Company, Nickerson-Rossi Dance, North Star Theater, Palm Canyon Theater, PS concerts, Palm Springs Dance Project, Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus, Palm Springs International Dance Festival and Theater 29.
What started in May 2020 as a support group for these organizations has grown into a strong advocacy alliance. Initial discussions focused on PPE, fundraising and streaming options, but then moved on to joint letters to elected officials and the governor’s office asking for safe operating guidelines.
With local performing arts groups located in six different cities and with auditoriums with a capacity of 80-400 seats, individual theaters may have hyper-local and / or specific Actors’ Equity Association regulations to respect which may vary from place to place. However, all OODT organizations are committed to following CDC guidelines that help maintain the health and safety of their clients, actors, crew, staff and volunteers.
